Emma Hart Seymour Battell was named for Emma Hart Willard and attended Emma Willard's school in Troy, N.Y., 1823-1825. She met Philip Battell in 1825 when he was a student at Middlebury College and became secretly engaged to him before he graduated in 1826. When they met in 1825, she was living in the house her father, Horatio Seymour (1778-1857) had built but spent from 1825? to winter 1830 at the Wainwright house.
